France-based Orthopedic Company names Jim Hook Managing Director of US operations
Mulhouse, France-based orthopedics company FH Orthopedics has named Jim Hook of Garner, N.C., managing director of United States operations. FH Orthopedics U.S. headquarters is based in Chicago.
Hook has four decades experience in the medical supply, instrument and device industry. He recently worked at Small Bone Innovations, Inc., in Morrisville, Penn., as senior vice president of North American Sales. At Small Bone Innovations, Hook led a team that achieved double digit growth using a combination of expanded field sales management implementation, upgraded direct and agent representatives, sales metrics, forecasting and new product introductions. The most significant product contributing to growth was the STAR™ ankle implant which Hook and his team were able to grow in excess of 35 percent over a three-year period.
Prior to that, he served as general manager of another France-based company called Tornier, Inc., in Stafford, Texas. While at Tornier, he helped increase sales over 8 fold while margins increased five percent. In 2006, the French owner sold the global operations to a U.S. group of investors who added additional companies to the Tornier-base business. Hook was directly responsible for leading the integration of the sales, marketing, finance, and operations of two acquisitions over a six month period in 2007.
Hook replaces Eric Hermann, who held the position previously.
“Jim is a great addition to our expanding team and he will be able to bring FH Orthopedics to the next level,” Hermann said. “It’s an honor to pass the torch to such an accomplished professional.”
Hook has been interested in orthopedics since he studied environmental biology at Furman University.
“When I was in college, I spent a lot of time on the human side of biology rather than plants or animals and I became interested in helping people relieve pain from orthopedic injuries and arthritis,” he said. Hook owes his entry into the medical field to a close friend who mentored him and convinced him his outgoing personality and knowledge of science would make him an ideal medical sales professional. His medical breeding also comes in handy as his mother, wife and wife’s mom are all nurses.
In addition to his bachelor’s degree in environmental biology at Furman, Hook earned a master’s degree in vertebrate zoology from the University of Denver and also graduated from the Graduate Management Program at Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Because Hook worked at another French-based orthopedic business in Tornier, he has confidence he can help FH Orthopedics reach its goals too.
“The keys to our success at FH will be to improve our sales and distribution strategy to ensure we have a high caliber, high service staff with in-depth product knowledge and that can present the product and support it in surgery while also educating the surgeon about advancements in techniques,” he said. “I’m excited to be working with a company with existing and established surgical products like the FH Arrow product,” he added.
Hook stressed that while FH isn’t as well-known as some of its more established competitors, he indicated FH has unique products in the sports medicine field such as the Arrow Universal Shoulder System and the CoLS Knee Ligament Repair that will be very competitive once surgeons are educated about them.
Hook knows he faces a challenge but knows that working with orthopedic surgeons is a rewarding endeavor; one that he will apply is patience, experience and marketing savvy toward reaching.
